Coffee Roasters for India and South Asia: Power, Gas, Duty and Ports

India is one of the few markets where the buyer usually knows more about coffee than we do about their market. We have taken enquiries from Bengaluru cafés, Coorg estates roasting their own crop, Chennai filter-coffee houses and distributors in Colombo and Dhaka — and the technical questions are consistently sharp. What trips projects up in South Asia is almost never the roasting. It is the electrical supply, the LPG connection, and the customs paperwork.

This guide covers what a buyer in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal or Pakistan needs to line up before ordering a commercial coffee roaster from China: power supply and the three-phase question, gas at commercial cylinder pressure, the import documents your CHA will ask for, realistic port and transit choices, and how local roast styles — including chicory blends and monsooned coffee — change what you should specify. 1. Power: 230 V / 50 Hz, and the Three-Phase Question

South Asia is straightforward at the socket and less straightforward at the panel. India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan all run 230 V single phase at 50 Hz, with 400–415 V three phase in commercial premises. Because we build to order, we wire the machine to your supply — but we need to know which one you have before we build, not after the container sails.

Two regional details worth planning for. First, supply stability: voltage dips and outages are a normal operating condition in parts of the region, and a roast interrupted mid-cycle by a power cut is a lost batch and, if the exhaust fan stops while the drum is hot, a safety event. If your site has an unreliable supply, budget for a stabiliser sized to the machine and make sure your generator, if you have one, can carry the fan and drum motors — not just the lights. Second, phase order matters: on a three-phase machine, reversed phase sequence spins the drum and fan backwards. It is a five-minute fix by an electrician at commissioning, and a bad first day if nobody checks. 2. Gas: LPG Is the Regional Default

Above about 3 kg, most South Asian roasteries run gas, and in almost every case that means LPG from commercial cylinders. Piped natural gas exists in parts of urban India and in Pakistan, but commercial LPG is the practical assumption unless you know otherwise.

  • Tell us the fuel at order stage. LPG and natural gas need different injector sizing and regulator settings. Converting after delivery is an installer job and an avoidable cost — one line in your enquiry prevents it.
  • Use commercial cylinders, not domestic ones. Domestic cylinders are not intended for continuous commercial draw, and a roaster running for hours will freeze a small cylinder and lose pressure mid-roast. Roasteries typically run a manifolded bank of commercial cylinders with an automatic changeover regulator.
  • Watch for pressure drop as the bank empties. If your burner behaves differently at the end of the day than at the start, check gas pressure before you blame the machine — this is one of the more common false alarms we handle over WhatsApp.
  • Local approval is local. Commercial LPG installation, cylinder storage and fire clearances are governed by state and municipal rules and, in India, by the relevant petroleum and explosives regulations. Your licensed gas contractor and the local fire authority are the authorities on what they will sign off — arrange that conversation before the machine ships, not after.

3. Import Paperwork: What Your CHA Will Ask For

Most first-time importers in the region underestimate this stage and then rush it. The good news is that it is procedural rather than difficult.

  • You need an importer code. In India that is the IEC (Importer-Exporter Code) from the DGFT — obtain it before you place the order, not when the vessel is arriving. Other South Asian markets have equivalent registration requirements.
  • Appoint a customs broker (CHA) early. Give them the machine description, HS code, invoice value and weight, and ask them in writing what duty and taxes to expect and what documents they need. Coffee roasting machinery generally falls under machinery headings such as 8419 or 8438 — have your CHA confirm the classification for your specific machine, because the code drives the duty rate.
  • Budget landed cost, not invoice cost. Basic customs duty plus applicable cess, and then IGST on the assessed value in India — machinery is commonly assessed at the 18% IGST rate, and IGST is normally creditable against your GST output if you are registered, which materially changes the real cost. Confirm both points with your CHA and accountant for your commodity code before you budget.
  • Documents we provide. Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and — where you need it — a Declaration of Conformity and component certificates. If you intend to claim a preferential duty rate under a trade agreement, tell us before shipment so the correct certificate of origin is issued; it cannot be added retrospectively without difficulty.
  • Certification. Buyers frequently ask whether a BIS mark is required. Mandatory BIS registration applies to specified product categories, and industrial roasting machinery is not typically among them — but rules change and specific electrical components can be listed, so ask your CHA to confirm for your consignment. 4. Ports, Freight and Timing

South Asia is well served from Chinese ports, and the sea leg is one of the easier parts of the project.

Transit times are indicative and depend on the carrier, the service and whether the routing is direct or transhipped via Singapore, Port Klang or Colombo. Your forwarder’s schedule is the number to plan against.

Add production time to that. A built-to-order machine takes roughly 25–40 days on our floor depending on size and customisation, so from deposit to first roast a realistic plan is ten to fourteen weeks including clearance and inland delivery. Two practical notes: machines destined for landlocked Nepal usually clear through an Indian port under transit procedures, which adds time and paperwork — brief your forwarder about that from the start. 5. Roasting for the Local Market

This is where South Asia differs from the markets most equipment guides are written for, and it does change what you should specify.

Robusta is the majority crop. India’s own production is predominantly robusta, grown mainly in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Robusta is denser and harder than most arabica and generally wants a slightly higher charge temperature and a bit more patience through the development phase. Filter coffee and chicory blends. South Indian filter coffee is traditionally a dark roast, often blended with chicory at anywhere from a modest proportion up to a third or more. If you plan to roast chicory as well as coffee, tell us — chicory roasts differently, burns more readily, and most roasteries handle it either as a clearly separated production run with its own profile and a thorough clean-down afterwards, or on a dedicated small machine. Dark profiles in general mean more smoke and more oil in the exhaust path, which raises the priority of your ventilation and abatement planning.

Monsooned coffee behaves unusually. Monsooned Malabar beans, exposed to monsoon winds during processing, are noticeably lower in density and lighter in colour than the same coffee unmonsooned. Low-density beans absorb heat faster and are easier to scorch — expect to reduce charge temperature relative to your standard profile and to rely on colour and sound rather than only on your usual time markers.

Humidity and green storage. Monsoon-season humidity changes moisture content in stored green, and green that has picked up moisture roasts slower and differently. If your profiles drift seasonally and you cannot explain it, your green store is the first place to look, not the machine.
