An Italian buyer wrote to our factory with a sentence we now quote internally: “I’m interested in a CE Certified small coffee roaster… European certification is very important.” He was right to lead with it. Across the roughly 150 enquiries a year we take from the UK, Ireland and continental Europe, the machine specification is almost never the thing that delays a project. Paperwork and planning permission are.
This guide covers what a buyer in the UK or the EU actually has to line up before ordering a commercial coffee roaster from China: voltage and the 13 A ceiling, what CE and UKCA mean in 2026 and what changes in January 2027, the gas installation gate, the odour abatement question that stops more British roasteries than any technical fault, and realistic freight, duty and VAT numbers into European ports. We manufacture these machines ourselves — we have been building roasters since 1990 — and we will be direct about which parts of this are our responsibility and which are yours.
1. Voltage, Plugs and the 13 A Ceiling
Europe and the UK run 230 V / 50 Hz single phase and 400 V / 50 Hz three phase. That part is simple and it is the same across the region. The trap is the socket.
A UK 13 A plug (BS 1363, Type G) is fused at 13 A, which is about 3 kW and no more. A Schuko socket (Type F, most of the EU) and a French Type E socket are typically 16 A, so about 3.6 kW. Anything above that — most electric roasters over 2 kg, and every afterburner — needs a hard-wired circuit or an industrial CEE connector (“Commando” blue 16/32 A single phase, red for three phase). Buyers regularly budget for the machine and forget the electrician.

Send us your site’s supply before we build. We wire the machine to your stated voltage and phase and issue the wiring diagram and nameplate rating so your electrician can size the circuit while the container is still at sea. 2. CE, UKCA and What Changes in January 2027
Three things European buyers should understand, because a surprising number of suppliers are vague here.
CE marking is a declaration, not a certificate you buy. For a coffee roaster the relevant route is machinery safety, and the file behind the mark is what matters: the Declaration of Conformity naming the applicable directives, the technical construction file, the risk assessment, and component certificates for the contactors, motors, thermocouples and PLC. Ask any supplier for the DoC before you pay a deposit. If what arrives is a logo on a brochure and nothing else, you have your answer. UKCA and Great Britain. After Brexit, Great Britain introduced the UKCA mark, but the UK government has since extended recognition of CE marking for most product areas including machinery, so at the time of writing CE-marked equipment is still accepted into GB. Northern Ireland continues to use CE or the UKNI mark. This policy has moved more than once — have your customs broker or a compliance consultant confirm the current position for your commodity code before you order, and keep the DoC with the machine either way.
January 2027 is a real deadline. The EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces the old Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and applies from 20 January 2027. If your roaster arrives and is placed on the EU market after that date, the documentation should reflect the new regulation. We are already working to it. If you are buying in late 2026 for a 2027 installation, ask your supplier directly whether their technical file is being updated — many will not know what you are talking about, which is itself informative.
3. Gas: The Installation Gate, Not the Machine
Most roasteries above 3 kg run gas, and in Europe the machine is rarely the problem. The installation is.
- United Kingdom. Commercial gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer holding the appropriate commercial appliance qualifications. Find that engineer before you order, not when the crate is on the pavement, and ask in writing what documentation they need to commission an imported appliance.
- EU. Gas appliance rules sit under Regulation (EU) 2016/426 plus national installation law, and enforcement differs meaningfully between, say, Germany and Spain. Your local installer is the authority on what they will sign off.
- Gas type matters at order stage. Natural gas (G20) and LPG (G30/G31 propane and butane) need different injectors and regulator settings. Tell us which supply you have — and the supply pressure — when you order. Converting later is an installer job, not an owner job.
If the gas route looks slow in your building or your lease forbids it, electric is a genuine option up to around 6 kg batch size rather than a compromise, and it removes this entire chapter from your project. 4. The Gate Nobody Warns You About: Odour and Planning
This is the single most European part of this guide, and the reason we wrote it. In Australia the hard gate is gas approval; in the UK and much of northern Europe, it is smell.
Roasting produces a distinctive plume. In the UK, a local authority can act on odour as a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and a change of use or a new flue on a listed or terraced building will usually need planning permission. Chimney height for certain installations falls under the Clean Air Act. In the Netherlands, Germany and the Nordics, comparable local air-quality and permitting rules apply. The pattern we see repeatedly: a roastery signs a lease in a mixed-use building, installs a 15 kg roaster, and receives its first complaint from the flat above within a month.
What to do, in order:
- Ask the council or municipality before signing the lease. Environmental health teams will usually tell you what abatement they expect for your capacity and location. Getting this in an email is worth more than any equipment brochure.
- Budget abatement into the machine cost, not as an afterthought. For a city-centre site above roughly 5–6 kg, assume you will need it.
- Choose the right abatement for the site. A thermal afterburner destroys odour compounds and smoke at high temperature and is the standard answer for larger installations; an electrostatic smoke filter (ESP) handles smoke and particulate with far lower running cost but is weaker on pure odour. Many urban European sites end up with both.
- Design the flue properly. Duct diameter, run length, bends and discharge height all matter, and a badly designed flue will both fail inspection and ruin your roast consistency. See coffee roaster ventilation requirements.

5. Freight, Duty and VAT

Add 25–40 days of production for a built-to-order machine plus customs and inland delivery. A realistic UK or EU plan is 11–15 weeks from deposit to first roast, and longer if Red Sea routing is in effect, which has added time and cost to Asia–Europe sailings in recent years.
Duty and tax. Coffee roasting machinery is commonly classified under HS heading 8419 (machinery for treating materials by a change of temperature). Third-country duty into the EU on this heading is low — in the region of 1.7% — and the UK Global Tariff is broadly comparable, often 0–2%. Import VAT is the bigger cash-flow item: 20% in the UK, 19–27% across EU member states, and recoverable if you are VAT registered. Two practical points: get your commodity code confirmed by your broker against the actual TARIC or UK Trade Tariff entry rather than trusting a supplier’s guess, and remember VAT is payable at import even though you will reclaim it later — several first-time buyers have been caught short here. 6. Which Capacity Fits a European Roastery
European roasteries tend to run smaller batches more often than their counterparts in the Gulf or Latin America — high rents, specialty positioning, small wholesale rounds. What we ship into this region clusters tightly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a CE certificate to import a coffee roaster into the UK or EU?
You need a Declaration of Conformity and the technical file behind it, which is what CE marking actually means — there is no single “CE certificate” you can buy. Ask for the DoC naming the applicable directives, the risk assessment, and component certificates for the electrical parts. Great Britain currently continues to recognise CE marking for machinery, with UKCA as an alternative; confirm the position for your commodity code with your broker before ordering, because this policy has changed more than once.
Will a 5 kg electric roaster run on a normal UK socket?
Usually not. A 13 A UK plug is limited to about 3 kW, and a 5 kg electric roaster draws well above that. You will need a dedicated hard-wired circuit or an industrial CEE connector, installed by a qualified electrician. Sample roasters and some 1 kg machines are the exceptions that will run from a standard socket. Send us your supply details and we build and wire the machine accordingly.
Do I need an afterburner for a roastery in a European city?
Above roughly 5–6 kg on an urban or mixed-use site, plan for abatement. UK councils can treat roasting odour as a statutory nuisance, and continental municipalities apply comparable air-quality rules. Ask the local environmental health team what they expect before signing the lease — an afterburner destroys odour thermally, an ESP filter handles smoke and particulate more cheaply, and busy city sites often use both.
How long does it take to get a roaster from China to the UK?
Plan on 11–15 weeks from deposit to first roast: 25–40 days production for a built-to-order machine, 30–40 days port to port to Felixstowe or Southampton, then customs clearance and inland delivery. Sailings via the Cape rather than Suez add time, so ask your forwarder for the current routing before you commit to an opening date.
What does the EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 mean for my order?
It replaces Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and applies from 20 January 2027. If your machine will be placed on the EU market on or after that date, its documentation should reflect the new regulation. If you are ordering in late 2026 for a 2027 installation, ask your supplier explicitly how their technical file is being updated — the answer tells you a great deal about how seriously they take compliance.
