A roastery in the Philippines asked us last year for “a filling and sealing machine” and, almost as an afterthought, “something to grind maybe 200 kilos a week for the supermarket bags.” Those two sentences describe a completely different machine from the espresso grinder sitting on a cafe counter — and buying the wrong one is one of the more expensive mistakes we see in this trade.
A bulk coffee grinder — also called a shop grinder, retail grinder or batch grinder — is built to move volume: hopper-fed, high throughput, running for hours rather than seconds. 1. What a Bulk Grinder Does That an Espresso Grinder Cannot
Four jobs drive almost every bulk grinder enquiry we handle:
- Roastery retail packing. You roast, you rest, you grind a portion of each batch into 250 g or 1 kg valve bags for supermarket, wholesale or online orders.
- Grind-at-the-till retail. A grocery, deli or coffee shop grinds a customer’s chosen beans to their brew method while they wait. The machine may run twenty times a day for thirty seconds, or twice a day for twenty minutes.
- Hotel, office and catering supply. Filter-grind volume for large urns and batch brewers, usually coarser and in kilos at a time.
- Pre-ground private label. A wholesaler grinding and packing under their own brand — the highest-volume version of this, and the one that eventually needs an industrial mill rather than a shop grinder.
An espresso grinder is optimised for fine, precise, repeatable dosing in single shots. A bulk grinder is optimised for kilos per hour across the medium-to-coarse range and for running continuously without overheating. 2. Throughput: The Spec That Actually Decides Your Purchase
Work backwards from kilos, not from the brochure. If you grind 200 kg a week and you can only spare one afternoon for it, you need roughly 50 kg/h with headroom — not a 20 kg/h counter machine run to death.

Two things to know about those numbers. First, quoted throughput is nearly always measured at a medium filter setting — grind finer and real output can fall by a third or more, so if you pack espresso-grind retail bags, discount the headline figure. Second, above about 300 kg/h the industry moves to roller mills rather than discs, because rollers produce a narrower particle distribution with fewer fines and generate less heat. 3. Duty Cycle: The Number Most Suppliers Will Not Volunteer
This is where cheap machines fail, and it is worth being blunt because we have replaced burnt-out grinders for customers who bought elsewhere on price.
A motor rated for S1 continuous duty can run all day. Many shop-grinder motors are rated for intermittent duty — perhaps 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off — and the spec sheet quietly says so, or says nothing at all. A roastery that grinds for three hours every Thursday will destroy an intermittent-duty motor within a year, and the failure will not be covered as a defect because the machine was used outside its rating.
Before you order, get written answers to these:
- Is the motor rated S1 continuous or intermittent? If intermittent, what is the on/off cycle?
- Is there a thermal cut-out, and does it reset automatically or need manual reset? Automatic reset in a busy retail setting is safer.
- Is the grinding chamber vented or fan-cooled? Heat build-up shifts your grind size mid-session — a real quality problem when you are packing to a spec.
- What is the hopper capacity, and does it have a shut-off gate so you can change beans without emptying it?
- Are burrs replaceable as a service part, and what is the quoted life in tonnes?
Burr life is the consumable nobody budgets for. Steel burrs in a bulk machine typically need replacing somewhere between 2 and 8 tonnes depending on burr size, material and roast level — dark roasts and any stray stone wear them faster. 4. Grinding Fresh-Roasted Coffee: Heat, CO₂ and Bag Failures
This is the section roastery buyers most often skip and most often come back about.
Let the beans cool and rest. Grinding warm beans straight off the cooling tray gives an irregular, fines-heavy grind and loads extra heat into the burrs. Beans should be at ambient temperature before they meet a burr.
Respect degassing. Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide for days, and grinding accelerates it enormously. Pack ground coffee into a sealed bag too early and it inflates like a pillow — or splits. The practical rule most roasteries settle on is a minimum rest of 12–24 hours before grinding for retail, and one-way degassing valves on every ground-coffee bag, without exception. Whole-bean bags can sometimes get away without a valve; ground bags cannot.
Grind for the customer’s brewer, not your own. A supermarket bag labelled simply “ground” satisfies nobody. Print or sticker the brew method, and set the machine against a reference — our coffee grind size chart gives the micron ranges from Turkish through to cold brew so your retail grind is repeatable between operators.
Roast level changes the setting. Darker roasts are more brittle and grind finer at the same dial position. If you sell a light single origin and a dark espresso blend from the same machine, they need different settings — and whoever is packing needs to know that.
5. Voltage, Plugs and Where It Ships
Roughly one grinder enquiry in six that reaches us leads with electrical supply — “110V commercial electric coffee grinder” is a phrase we see constantly from buyers in the Philippines, Mexico, Colombia and Canada. Get it right at order stage, because a bulk grinder motor is not a field conversion.

Tell us voltage and frequency. A 50 Hz motor run on 60 Hz spins faster, which changes throughput, grind consistency and bearing life — it is not a harmless mismatch. And if the machine is going onto a three-phase supply, confirm phase rotation before the first run; a reversed motor is the single most common commissioning fault we troubleshoot, on grinders and on roasters alike.
6. Where the Bulk Grinder Sits in a Roastery Line
A bulk grinder is rarely bought alone. The sequence that works is roaster → cooling → rest → destoner if you are grinding green-adjacent volumes → grinder → filling and sealing. Frequently Asked Questions
What size bulk coffee grinder do I need for 200 kg a week?
A heavy shop grinder in the 1.5–3 kW class, rated around 60–120 kg/h, with a continuous-duty motor. That gives you 200 kg in roughly three to four hours with headroom, and headroom is the point — running a 20–40 kg/h counter machine for eight hours to hit the same number is how motors and burrs die early. Remember that quoted throughput is measured at a medium filter grind and drops if you pack finer.
Can I use my espresso grinder to grind retail bags?
Not for volume. Espresso grinders are built for short bursts and fine, precise dosing; sustained kilo-after-kilo grinding overheats them, shifts the grind mid-run and wears burrs quickly. Occasional bags are fine. A weekly packing session is a different machine.
How long should coffee rest before I grind it for retail bags?
Most roasteries settle on a minimum of 12–24 hours after roasting, and beans must be at ambient temperature before grinding.
