Coffee Roasters for Australia & New Zealand: Voltage, Compliance & Shipping

Every few weeks someone messages our factory from Melbourne, Perth or Auckland with a version of the same sentence: “Where are the plugs for the machines?” It sounds like a small question. It is actually the first of about five compliance questions that decide whether a coffee roaster imported into Australia or New Zealand gets switched on in week one or sits in a shed for three months waiting on an electrician and a gasfitter.

This guide covers what buyers in Australia and New Zealand need to confirm before ordering a commercial coffee roaster from China: voltage and circuits, the RCM and gas-approval question, biosecurity and packaging, freight into Port Botany or Tauranga, and which capacity actually fits an ANZ roastery. 1. Voltage and Circuits: 230 V Is Only Half the Answer

Australia and New Zealand both run 230 V / 50 Hz nominal single phase (Australia historically quoted 240 V; the harmonised figure is 230 V and equipment rated 220–240 V works on both). Three phase is 400 V / 50 Hz. Plugs are Type I (AS/NZS 3112).

The trap is not the voltage. It is the circuit. A standard 10 A general power outlet delivers roughly 2.3 kW. Most electric roasters above a 1 kg sample machine draw more than that, so they need a dedicated 15 A, 20 A or 32 A circuit — and in Australia those use physically different plug pin sizes, so you cannot simply plug a 15 A appliance into a 10 A socket.

2. Compliance: RCM, EESS and the Gas Question

Here is the honest version, because vague answers cost buyers money in this region.

Electrical. Australia and New Zealand use the Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) under the Electrical Equipment Safety System. Whether a given piece of commercial equipment is in scope, and at which risk level, depends on classification — and the legal duty sits with the Responsible Supplier, which is the Australian or New Zealand importing entity, not the overseas factory. What we provide is the technical file: circuit diagrams, component certificates for the contactors, motors and PLC, and factory test records. What your side provides is the local registration and any testing your risk level requires. Ask your customs broker or a compliance consultant to confirm scope for your HS code before you pay a deposit.

CE is not RCM. Our machines are built to CE requirements and that documentation travels with the machine, but a CE file is not automatic acceptance in ANZ. Gas is the strict one. Gas appliances in Australia and New Zealand fall under state and national gas safety regimes, and installation must be done by a licensed gasfitter who will want appliance approval documentation. This is the single biggest reason ANZ buyers get stuck. Two practical routes:

  • Talk to a licensed gasfitter before you order, not after. Get their written position on what they need to commission an imported roaster in your state or region.

If you go gas: bottled LPG is common in regional Australia and much of New Zealand, reticulated natural gas in the cities. Tell us which at order stage — the injectors and regulator setting differ, and swapping later is a job for the gasfitter, not the owner.

3. Biosecurity and Packaging: Do Not Skip This

Australia’s DAFF and New Zealand’s MPI run some of the strictest biosecurity regimes in the world, and machinery containers get looked at.

  • ISPM 15 timber. All wooden crating and pallets must be heat-treated and stamped. Our roasters ship in ISPM 15 compliant crates as standard; ask for photos of the stamp before departure.
  • Cleanliness. Machinery must arrive free of soil, plant material and pests. New machines from our factory are clean, but this is the reason we advise against buying second-hand roasters into ANZ — used equipment can require cleaning, inspection and treatment at your cost.   • Seasonal measures. Both countries apply seasonal pest measures to certain goods and origins, and the target list changes year to year. Have your broker check the current season’s requirements against your sailing date — a container that arrives inside a treatment window without documentation gets held.

4. Freight, Duty and GST

Add roughly 25–40 days of production before the vessel sails, depending on capacity and customisation, plus a week of port and inland handling on arrival. A realistic order-to-first-roast window for ANZ is 10–14 weeks. Anyone promising four weeks for a built-to-order 15 kg machine is quoting stock, not production.

On landed cost: coffee roasting machinery is usually classified under HS 8419.89 — confirm with your broker. Both countries have a free trade agreement with China (ChAFTA and the NZ–China FTA), and many machinery lines enter duty free with a valid certificate of origin, which we issue. You will still pay GST on the landed value: 10% in Australia, 15% in New Zealand. Budget for it; it is not part of our quotation. Australian and New Zealand specialty roasters skew toward wholesale-to-cafe models with high quality expectations and relatively small batch sizes. What we see ordered into the region:

6. A Practical Pre-Order Checklist for ANZ Buyers

  1. Have your electrician confirm available supply: single phase 230 V or three phase 400 V, and the maximum circuit they can run to the roaster’s position.
  2. If gas: get a licensed gasfitter’s written requirements before you place the order.
  3. Confirm your ventilation route and any local council requirements for flue discharge — start with our ventilation requirements guide.
  4. Ask your broker for HS classification, FTA certificate of origin requirements, and current biosecurity seasonal measures.
  5. Ask us for: wiring diagram, nameplate rating, machine footprint and crate dimensions, exhaust outlet diameter, and a video of your actual machine test-roasting before it ships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a coffee roaster from China work in Australia and New Zealand?

Yes, provided it is built for 230 V / 50 Hz single phase or 400 V / 50 Hz three phase and wired to your site’s actual supply. Tell us your voltage and phase at order stage and the machine is built that way — this is not a field conversion. The plug is Type I (AS/NZS 3112), and anything above roughly 2.3 kW needs a dedicated higher-amperage circuit rather than a standard 10 A outlet.

Do I need RCM certification for an imported coffee roaster?

The Regulatory Compliance Mark obligation sits with the Australian or New Zealand importing entity as Responsible Supplier, and whether your machine is in scope depends on its classification and risk level. We supply the technical file — wiring diagrams, component certificates and factory test records — so your compliance consultant or broker can complete that process. We cannot register on your behalf, and any supplier claiming their CE mark automatically satisfies RCM is not being straight with you.

Is a gas or electric roaster easier to get approved in Australia?

Electric, clearly. Gas appliances must be installed by a licensed gasfitter under state and national gas safety rules and they will require appliance documentation. Up to about 6 kg batch capacity our electric models are a real alternative, not a compromise. Above that, gas remains the practical choice — start the approval conversation with a gasfitter before you order.

How long does shipping to Australia or New Zealand take?

Port to port is typically 16–25 days to the Australian east coast and 18–30 days to New Zealand. Add 25–40 days of production time plus port and inland handling, so plan on 10–14 weeks from deposit to first roast for a built-to-order machine.
