Coffee Roasters for Malaysia, Indonesia & Thailand: Buyer Guide

Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are three of our most active markets — between them they send us more inquiries than any region outside the Middle East. The questions repeat: does it run on 230V, does it burn LPG, how long to Port Klang or Tanjung Priok, and can it handle local robusta? This guide answers all of it for buyers choosing a coffee roaster in Southeast Asia, from Kuala Lumpur cafes to Sumatran origin roasters.

Buyers further west face a different checklist: our guide to coffee roasters for India and South Asia covers 415 V three-phase supply, commercial LPG cylinder banks and Indian customs paperwork.

Power: 230V/50Hz Across All Three Markets

Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand all run 220–230V at 50 Hz — simpler than the Philippines’ 60 Hz special case (covered in our Philippines guide). What still needs specifying:

  • Single-phase vs three-phase — gas machines up to 12 kg run on ordinary single-phase; 20 kg+ or electric heating needs 380V three-phase, common in Indonesian and Thai industrial estates but worth confirming for shophouse locations
  • Grid stability — for outer-island Indonesia locations, choose gas heating with its small electrical load, and add a modest stabilizer for the control board (full logic in the voltage guide)

Fuel: LPG Cylinders Are the Regional Standard

All three countries have cheap, ubiquitous LPG. Our burners ship configured for LPG with the regulator pressure stated on the quotation; city natural gas (parts of Bangkok, KL) is a factory option — say which you have when you inquire. Electric 1–3 kg models suit mall cafes where cylinders are prohibited.

Roasting Local Beans: Robusta, Liberica & Wet-Hulled Arabica

This region roasts its own harvest, and that changes the machine requirements:

  • Indonesian robusta and wet-hulled (giling basah) Sumatra arabica carry higher, less even moisture — you want strong burner turndown and airflow control to dry gently without scorching. Standard on our YS and SD drums
  • Thai and Malaysian robusta for traditional dark roasts (kopi-o, oliang style, sometimes with sugar/margarine finishing in separate equipment) run long and dark — a cast iron drum holds the heat stability those profiles need
  • Specialty arabica from North Thailand or Aceh — profile repeatability matters; Siemens PLC models log every curve (see Artisan connection)

Sizing for the Market

Your business Recommended Note
Specialty cafe (KL/Bangkok/Jakarta) DY 1–2 kg electric or YS-3 Mall-friendly, no gas permit
Roastery supplying cafes YS 6–12 kg LPG The region’s most-ordered class
Origin roaster at source (Sumatra, Chiang Rai) SD 6–15 kg Robust build, easy field service
Traditional kopi factory / private label SD 30–120 kg line With destoner + smoke treatment

Shipping: Close, Fast, Cheap

  • Sea freight from Shenzhen: Port Klang / Penang 5–9 days on the water; Tanjung Priok (Jakarta) 7–12; Laem Chabang / Bangkok 5–8 — the shortest routes we ship anywhere
  • Documentation: commercial invoice, packing list, CO (Form E where applicable for ASEAN–China tariff preference — ask your broker), CE/SGS papers under HS 8419
  • Humidity-proof packing: plywood case with moisture barrier, built for tropical transit and monsoon-season ports
  • Small machines go by air/courier in 3–7 days

Support Across the Region

1-year warranty, lifetime video-call support in English (voice notes welcome), and consumable spares couriered to MY/ID/TH in 3–5 days. A running video of your machine ships before the balance payment — standard. Real examples of how that works: after-sales support cases.

FAQ

Do your roasters work on Malaysian/Indonesian/Thai power?

Yes — all three markets are 220–230V/50Hz and machines are built for it as standard. Specify three-phase availability only for 20 kg+ or electric-heated models.

Can the roaster handle robusta and wet-hulled beans?

Yes — strong burner turndown and adjustable airflow handle high-moisture robusta and giling basah lots; dark traditional profiles suit the cast iron drum.

How long does delivery to Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur take?

Production 15–25 working days, then 5–12 days sea freight depending on port. Total commonly under six weeks door to door.

Is there ASEAN tariff preference for Chinese machines?

Many buyers clear under the ASEAN–China FTA with a Form E certificate of origin — confirm current rates with your customs broker; we prepare the paperwork.
