“My neighbors are complaining about the smoke” is how most conversations about smoke control start — usually months after the roaster was installed. A coffee roaster smoke filter (electrostatic precipitator, or ESP) is the mid-tier solution between doing nothing and installing a gas-hungry afterburner. As the factory that builds both the roasters and the matched filters, here is how ESP filters actually work, when they are enough, and how to size one correctly.
How an Electrostatic Smoke Filter Works
Roaster exhaust passes through a high-voltage ionizing field that charges smoke particles, oil aerosols and fine chaff dust; charged particles then stick to collector plates while cleaned air continues up the stack. Three practical consequences:
- 95%+ of visible smoke and particulate is removed — the plume from your stack largely disappears
- Running cost is electric and small — a mid-size unit draws ~300W, versus an afterburner burning 30,000–50,000 kcal/hour of gas
- Plates need washing — the captured oils build up; cleaning every 1–4 weeks (roast volume dependent) is the maintenance trade-off
ESP Filter vs Afterburner: Which Do You Need?
| ESP smoke filter | Afterburner | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes | Visible smoke, particulate, most oils | Smoke + odor + VOCs (full combustion) |
| Running cost | ~300W electricity | Significant gas consumption every roast |
| Typical buyer | Urban roastery with smoke complaints, moderate regulations | Strict emissions zones, residential proximity, odor-sensitive neighbors |
| Budget (typical) | $1,500 – $4,000 | $3,000 – $8,000 + gas line upgrade |
| Maintenance | Plate washing every 1–4 weeks | Burner service; little daily upkeep |
Rule of thumb from our installations: if the complaint is what people see, ESP; if the complaint is what people smell, afterburner. Some strict jurisdictions require the afterburner regardless — check local rules first. Full afterburner coverage: our afterburner buyer’s guide.
Sizing: Match Airflow, Not Roaster Size
An ESP filter is sized by exhaust airflow (m³/hour), which must exceed your roaster’s exhaust output — an undersized filter chokes the draft and changes your roast profiles. Our matched pairs:
- 1–6 kg roasters → compact ESP, ~2,000 m³/h
- 6–15 kg roasters → YS-JD-Q4 class, ~4,000 m³/h
- 20 kg+ → industrial ESP or afterburner, sized per line
Because we build the roasters, the filter is matched at the factory — flange diameter, airflow and mounting — and shipped in the same crate. Retrofitting to an existing roaster (any brand) works too: send us the exhaust duct diameter and roaster capacity.
Installation Notes
- Install after the chaff cyclone, before the stack — the cyclone catches coarse chaff so plates stay effective longer
- Keep a straight duct run into the unit where possible; sharp elbows before the filter cause turbulence and uneven collection
- Plan a wash station nearby — plates are removed and degreased; make it easy or it will not happen
- Ventilation planning for the whole line: see our ventilation requirements guide
FAQ
Does an ESP filter remove roasting odor?
Partially — it captures the oil aerosols that carry much of the smell, but not gaseous VOCs. If odor is the main complaint (close residential neighbors), an afterburner is the reliable fix.
How often do the plates need cleaning?
Every 1–4 weeks depending on roast volume and roast level (darker roasts deposit more oil). Skipping cleaning degrades capture efficiency and can trip the high-voltage supply.
Can I add a smoke filter to a roaster you did not build?
Yes — ESP units retrofit to any brand. Send the exhaust duct diameter, roaster capacity and available space; we quote a matched unit with adapters.
Do city regulations require a smoke filter?
Many urban jurisdictions require smoke treatment above roughly 5 kg capacity. Requirements vary widely — verify with local authorities before installation, and keep the filter’s spec sheet for the inspection file.
