Buying a coffee roaster in Canada raises three questions that buyers elsewhere rarely face together: which voltage the building actually has, what an electrical and gas inspector will accept, and how a crated machine crosses the Pacific and clears customs. Here is the practical version, from the factory that builds the machines.
1. Voltage: Ask the Electrician Before You Ask Us
“Does this work with 110 volts?” is the single most common opening question from Canadian buyers, and the answer depends entirely on how the machine is heated.

Two Canadian specifics worth repeating: everything is 60 Hz, so fan and drum motors are specified differently from the 50 Hz world, and 208V is not 220V — heating elements sized for 220V lose roughly 10% of their output on 208V, which shows up as sluggish first crack. 2. Certification: CE Is Not the Canadian Standard
European buyers ask for CE; Canadian buyers need to think in terms of what the local authority having jurisdiction will accept before it energises the machine:

- Electrical: equipment normally needs a recognised certification mark (CSA, cUL, cETL) or, for a one-off imported machine, a field evaluation — an inspection body examines the actual unit on site and applies a field-approval label. Budget time and a four-figure fee for this, and confirm the requirement with your provincial authority (ESA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC, etc.) before shipping.
- Gas: installation falls under the CSA B149 codes and must be done by a licensed gas fitter. Burner assemblies with recognised component approvals make that conversation much easier — tell us at the quotation stage that the machine is destined for Canada.
- Ventilation and emissions: municipal requirements vary. Many roasteries in Canadian cities are asked about visible smoke and odour in mixed-use buildings; that is where an ESP smoke filter or a full afterburner enters the plan.

3. Gas Supply: Natural Gas or Propane
Most Canadian commercial buildings have natural gas; rural sites and some prairie and maritime locations run propane. The burner orifice and pressure regulator differ between the two, so this is a build-time decision, not a field swap. 4. Cold-Climate Details Most Guides Skip
- Make-up air: a roaster exhausts a lot of air. In a sealed, heated Canadian building the extracted volume has to be replaced or the machine will struggle to draw — plan make-up air with your ventilation design, not after installation.
- Short, insulated duct runs: long cold ducting condenses tar and moisture. Keep runs short, sloped and cleanable.
- Winter arrival: a crate that has spent weeks at sea and days in freezing transit needs to sit indoors and reach room temperature before power-up, so condensation does not sit on the control board.
- Warm-up time: in a cold roastery, allow a longer pre-heat — profiles logged in summer will not reproduce in February without it.

Will a coffee roaster from China work in Canada?
Yes, provided it is built for 60 Hz and the correct voltage (120V, 240V, 208V three phase or 600V with a transformer), the burner is set for your fuel, and you arrange the electrical certification or field evaluation your province requires.
Do I need CSA certification for an imported coffee roaster?
You need an accepted mark or a field evaluation of the individual machine. Many imported roasters go the field-evaluation route: an accredited body inspects the unit on site and applies an approval label. Confirm the process with your provincial authority before shipping.
Can I run an electric roaster on 208V three phase?
Only if the heating elements are wound for 208V. Elements made for 220–240V run roughly 10% weak on 208V, which shows up as slow ramps and late first crack. Specify the supply before production.
