Laser Cutting the Roaster Body: Tolerances That Decide Whether Panels Line Up

Stand in front of a roaster and look at where two panels meet. If the gap is even from top to bottom, the parts were cut accurately. If it wanders, or has been filled, the parts were not. Buyers judge a machine’s build quality in that first glance more than they realise, and the glance is mostly judging the cutting.

Where this step sits

Laser cutting is the first sheet-metal step, after incoming material inspection and before CNC bending and welding. Every flat stainless and steel part on the machine — panels, front plate blanks, cyclone segments, cooling tray perforations, brackets — starts here.

What laser cutting does that other methods do not

Sheet parts can be cut by shearing, punching, plasma or laser. For a roaster, laser has three advantages:

Accuracy. A laser cuts to the drawing to a fraction of a millimetre, and cuts the same part identically a hundred times. Panels cut this way sit flush against each other with an even gap, need no filing to fit, and bend on the same lines every time.

Clean edges. A laser leaves a narrow, square edge with little burr and no heat distortion of the sheet around it. That edge is what goes into the weld, and a clean edge welds with less filler, less heat and less distortion.

Complex shapes in one pass. The perforated cooling tray, the ventilation slots in a panel, the openings for gauges, switches and the sight glass are all cut in the same operation as the panel outline, in the right place relative to each other.

How we do it

Panels and parts for every model are cut in our own factory on German-made laser cutting equipment, from the inspected 304 stainless and steel stock, from the same CAD drawings used for the rest of the machine. Cutting in-house rather than buying parts from a subcontractor means the fit of every part is under our control and a drawing change reaches the floor the same day. The parts in the photographs on this page are as-cut, before bending.

We do not list machine specifications on this page. If you are conducting an engineering review of our facility, ask and we will provide them.

What this means for you

  • The machine looks the way a well-built machine looks: even seams, aligned openings, a front plate whose gauges and switches sit square.
  • It stays that way. Parts that fit without force are not fighting each other after a year of heat cycling.
  • Replacement panels fit. A damaged panel five years from now is cut from the same file and fits without modification.

How to verify this on any roaster

Look at three places: the gap where the side panel meets the front plate, the openings around the control panel switches, and the perforations in the cooling tray. Even gaps, square openings and identical holes mean accurate cutting. Filler, uneven gaps, and holes that vary in size mean the parts were cut by a less precise method and made to fit by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser cutting used on the drum?

No. The SD and YS drums are cast and machined, not cut from sheet. Laser cutting is for panels, plates, brackets, the cyclone and the cooling tray. On DY and EC machines the stainless drum shell is cut from sheet before rolling.

Does laser cutting affect the stainless finish?

The cut edge is deburred afterwards and the panel is then brushed or polished, so the finished surface shows no sign of the cutting process. See grinding and deburring and brushed finishes.

Can you cut custom openings — for example, for a different gauge or a data port?

Yes. Because panels are cut from CAD files in our own plant, a customer-specific opening is a drawing change, not a manual modification.

Why does it matter whether the cutting is in-house?

Control and speed. A subcontracted part that arrives wrong holds up a machine for a week and tempts the fitter to “make it work”. A part cut in-house is remade in an hour.

Final thoughts

Cutting is where a machine’s fit and finish are decided, long before anyone sees it. The parts go next to CNC bending and then to welding. Or return to the full build sequence.
