CNC Bending: Getting a Straight Edge on a 2 mm Stainless Panel

A flat panel becomes a roaster body when it is bent — into a side, a top, a return edge, a flange for the next panel to bolt to. Bend it two degrees off and nothing downstream fits; bend it with the wrong tooling and every edge carries a mark that no finish will hide. This is a step buyers never think about and see the result of every day.

Where this step sits

Bending follows laser cutting and precedes welding. Every panel that is not flat in the finished machine passes through here.

What has to be right

Angle. A 90° bend must be 90°, and it must be 90° on the hundredth panel as on the first. Stainless steel springs back after bending — release the press and the angle opens slightly — and the amount depends on the grade, thickness and grain direction. The bend is programmed to overshoot by the right amount so that the finished angle is correct.

Position. The bend line must be where the drawing puts it, to a fraction of a millimetre, or the panel’s overall dimension is wrong and it will not meet its neighbours.

Surface. Bending 304 stainless with plain tooling leaves a witness line along the bend that shows through brushing. Panels that will be seen are bent with protected tooling so the surface stays clean.

Straightness. A long bend on a thin sheet wants to bow. Tooling and sequence are chosen so the edge comes out straight along its full length — which is what you see as a clean, level line where the top panel meets the side.

How we do it

Panels are bent in our own plant on CNC press brakes from programs written against the same CAD model that the laser cut them from. Because cutting and bending are done in the same place from the same data, a panel’s bend lines are located relative to its cut edges exactly as designed; there is no hand marking. Springback compensation is set per material and thickness and checked against a first-off panel before a batch is run.

The navy SD-1.5 on this page shows what the result looks like in colour: continuous edges, flat panels, an even return around the front plate.

What this means for you

  • Panels bolt together without persuasion. The body is square, which is what the drum and the doors are aligned to.
  • Brushed stainless panels have no bend marks; powder-coated panels have no ripples along the edge.
  • A replacement panel ordered in five years is bent from the same program and fits.

How to verify this on any roaster

Sight along the top edge of a side panel from one end. It should be straight. Look at the vertical edge where the side meets the front: even, with no gaps that open toward the top or bottom. On a brushed stainless machine, look for a faint line running parallel to each bend; its absence tells you protected tooling was used.

Frequently asked questions

Why not weld flat panels together instead of bending?

A bent edge is one continuous piece of metal — stronger, cleaner and cheaper to finish than a welded corner. Welding is used where bending cannot make the shape; bending is used everywhere it can.

Does the bend weaken stainless steel?

No. Cold-formed 304 is slightly harder at the bend than in the flat, which if anything stiffens the panel. The grain direction is chosen so the bend does not crack, which is a programming matter.

Do you bend the cast iron body?

No. The SD and YS cast bodies are cast and machined; bending applies to the stainless and steel sheet parts around them.

Can panels be bent to a customer's design for an OEM order?

Yes, within the machine’s structure. OEM changes to panel shape are handled as drawing revisions and cut and bent from the revised files.

Final thoughts

Bending is the step that turns accurate cutting into an accurate body. The panels go next to welding, then to grinding, deburring and finishing. Or return to the full build sequence.
